Second
Day: Swashbuckling pirates once
strode the streets of Tampico, raiding the port. You will catch a
fleeting glimpse of the past as we tour the elegant and imposing Maritime
Customs House and the dock area with shipping from allover the world.
Circling Tampico by the Carpenter's Lagoon we make a stop at the Museum of Huastec Culture and Tampicos's well known Pyramid of Las
Flores. After breakfast, you'll go south through Poza Rica to Papantla's fascinating market. Here you may buy a Totonac dictionary - or interesting objects of the region. You may even purchase
figures such as a flower or scorpion made from the vanilla pod!
You'll enjoy stopping at the Museum of Totonac Culture and seeing
exhibits of their living quarters and way of life. Overnight at the Poza Rica Inn, one of the best hotels in the tropics.
Breakfast Included.
Third Day: As
we drive to El Tajín you'll see Totonac Indians along the road dressed in
their quaint puffy white costumes with black high top shoes. Entering the
ruins your attention will be riveted by the amazing Pyramid of the
Niches, with 365 square recesses, believed to represent the days of
the year. Another interpretation is that they symbolize night and day,
light and dark - duality in the universe composed of opposites. An unusual
number of ball courts - II at last tally - have been found here. Carved
stone panels show us the rituals of the game played by two splendidly
dressed opponents using a heavy ball made of solid rubber from trees in
the area. The ceremonial game ended with the sacrificial death of the
loser. You will see the "Flying Men of Papantla" perform
their death-defying ceremony upon a l00 foot high pole. The melodious
sounds of their flute call you to watch them descend in dreamy circles.
Overnight at theHotel Holiday Inn in Tampico.
Breakfast Included.
Fourth
Day: Green mountains and sweeping
valleys offer majestic views on the way to Cd. Victoria. We have
time for a bird's eye view of the state's capital city before heading
back. We arrive in the Rio Grande Valley about 5:30 PM.

El Tajin will become even more
important than the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon," said Jose Garcia
Payón, archaeologist of El Tajín. Named for the god of the Hurricane, an
awesome force to the Totonac Indians, El Tajin has many mysteries, to
this day. Who were these people who built a great city, with
magnificent palaces and ball courts, a pyramid with 365 niches, with an architecture stunning in its concept and splendid in
its execution? Why did their civilization fall? What was their life like ? Come with us and explore some of these
mysteries!
First Day: Departing
from the Rio Grande Valley through Reynosa, you're already on your
way for an unforgettable trip. Your first stop: Tampico, -on the
Gulf of "May-hee-co." The native girls won't be
"waiting for you at the dock," as in the song, but you'll have
plenty of lush tropical vegetation, bird songs and church bells. After
your welcome cocktail at the Hotel Holiday Inn (downtown) on the Plaza and before you
turn in -check out the Plaza de la Libertad Historic Center a short
distance from your hotel. The quaint old-fashioned buildings with their
lacy wrought-iron balconies are guaranteed to charm you! |
