Guanajuato is more like Spain than
Spain itself, with decorative balconies spilling oveer with red geraniums.
Each street scene is like a picture from a book. You'll stroll down
the Street of the Kiss in evening lamp-light with groups of singers.
Soft romantic nighttime serenades are unforgettable. Stay in modern
luxury at Hotel Misión with the bougainvilla draped ex-Hacienda de la
Barrera adjoining it. Explore furnished rooms in the restored old
Hacienda and marvel at its stunningly beautiful formal gardens. Then visit Mexico's second largest
city, where Mariachi music, tequila and rich folk art traditions are part
of a proud heritage. You'll see how we Northerners live when you
explore the retirement communities of Ajijíc and Lake Chapala. Stay
at the centrally located Hotel de Compostela in the heart of Guadalajara.
There's much to see on the city tour. Shoppers won't believe the
assortment of items at the extraordinary city market.
First Day: Depart from the Rio Grande Valley of
Texas, clearing Mexican customs in Reynosa. Travel Hwy #57 across the
central plateau, dotted with a forest of Joshua trees on the way to San Luis
Potosí. Your host hotel, the Hotel Panorama, is located on the
city's main plaza. For those who want to splurge on fine
dinner, Dan Sanborn's favorite restaurant, La Vineyas, is only a few doors
away.
Student Minstrels Musical Program.

Second Day: Begin your day with a look at
the Governor's Palace, the cathedral and the Teatro de Paz in San Luis
Potosí. Then leave for Guanajuato, visit the little town
of Dolores Hidalgo. Called the Cradle of Independence, this was the
town where Father Hidalgo first sounded the rallying cry in the fight
against Spanish rule. Then continue your fascinating journey to
Guanajuato. Enter the fanciful maze of city streets and arrive at
your hotel, the Mision Hacienda de Barrera.
Breakfast Included.
Third Day: There is not one straight street in Guanajuato.
You'll find some of them duck underground into tunnels and quickly pop up
into pretty plazas. Take a spin up to the massive statue of Pipila.
Te view of the city below is dazzling. You'll visit Plaza de
Armas and elegant Teatro Juirez. Then learn about the
unbelievable wealth extracted from the Valenciana silver mine while
looking into one of it's entrances. Tonight, join locals and
tourists in the plaza as they prepare to follow along with a group of
student singers, and Estudiantina, dressed in medieval costumes as
they sing romantic songs under the lamp-light.
Breakfast Included.
Fourth Day: Today, drive to magnificent Guadalajara. You will stay at your downtown host hotel, the Holiday Inn Centro Historico. This is indeed the city of
eternal springtime climate, fountains, flowers and monuments.
Founded in the 1500's the city enjoys its own architectural beauty,
abundance of products and strength of character.
Breakfast Included.
Fifth Day: Your day will take you to the city's
famous cathedral, the Governor's Palace and the Degollado
Theater, home of the Gudalajara Orchestra. Later drive to serene Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest, and Ajijic for a look at
retirement living.

await you today in the city market and in Tlaquepaque, a lovely
neighborhood of quiet ships exhibiting works of art and inexpensive but
exquisite handicraft items.

San Juan de los Lagos. Visit the site of one of Mexico's revered
