First Day: You'll
leave the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, clearing Mexican customs in Reynosa, then through citrus
groves at Montemorelos, and continue to Linares, an agricultural and cattle
center. Here the highway winds into green mountain passes. You'll stop at
beautiful Santa Rosa Canyon for picture taking. Late afternoon arrival in Matehuala. Your
host will be the Las
Palmas Midway Hotel.
Second
Day: The
incredible city of Real de Catorce sits like a surprise tucked in among the
mountains. You'll travel there in special mini-buses. To enter the city, you
must pass through a 1 1/2 mile long tunnel. Bright sunlight leads us
dramatically out of the tunnel and into the 1700's. The architecture bears the
stamp of colonial Spain. There are thick-walled mansions of stone, graceful
fountains, central plazas rimmed with old homes decorated with gargoyles and
wrought iron "lace" balconies. Founded in 1771, within 30 years it
became the second richest silver mining area in the Americas. The town has an
opera house, mansions, two cathedrals, two coin mints, and other interesting
buildings which you'll see. Following your visit, you'll again board the coach and travel to Saltillo. There
will be time for sightseeing including a visit to an authentic sarape factory and
to the bakery to buy some "pulque bread" to take home. Then
check-in at the beautiful Camino Real Hotel. As special
guests of the hotel, you'll receive a complimentary cocktail upon arrival.
Third Day: This
morning you're off for a tour of Saltillo to view charming old buildings, flower-filled patios and public attractions, including the Governor's Palace, the famous Bird Museum, and the cathedral. You'll arrive in
the Valley about 5:30 p.m.

Tunnel entrance, Real de Catorce
|
Hollywood has recently discovered what we
have always known. A great mini adventure to the Incredible City lies only one
day south of home. There, the traveler can enter a time capsule by simply
driving through a tunnel. Few would guess that near its entrance was one of the
richest silver mines ever worked. In the late 1800's it produced over $25 milion
for its lucky owner. At the other end of the tunnel, Real de Catorce awaits,
shimmering in golden sunlight ready to share its memories of the "glory days."
Once presidents and kings, boomtown bandits and gamblers sought fame and wealth
in a city of opera houses and opportunists. Today, music and the laughter of
fine ladies are only echoes heard through beautiful abandoned buildings. You'll
visit the Opera House, the Mint, and see one of the most unusual
collections of "retablos" in Mexico. These hand painted pictures on tin depict
some pretty awesome disasters. They are deposited in the magnificent cathedral
with messages of gratitude from the survivors. Visit a palenque where
cockfights are held for a simulated event. You'll see one! Also included are
visits to colonial Saltillo and exciting Monterrey. You'll love your special
souvenir book, too! |

Real de Catorce is the only town in the world accessable by a 1 1/2 mile tunnel |
