Brownsville Drivers: Insure Your Vehicle When Crossing the U.S./Mexico Border

Brownsville is the easternmost city along America’s border with Mexico. It is also a major international economic and tourist destination.

Cross-border commerce and travel are huge parts of the local community. If you live in the area, you’ll probably drive south across the Rio Grande border at some point. Even so, when you do cross into Mexico, you must do so legally. Part of that process will involve getting a mandatory Mexican auto insurance policy. Remember, Mexico does not recognize foreign insurance, and even if your U.S. coverage includes coverage up to 25 mile from the border, it is only for damages to your vehicle and doesn’t meet the requirements in Mexico. Your U.S. coverage won't protect your liability in case that you are at-fault in an accident.

If you are not sure how to get coverage, turn to Sanborn’s Mexico Auto Insurance. We specialize in helping all American drivers get appropriate insurance for their international travel.

Crossing the Border

There are three border crossings in the Brownsville area with Matamoros, the Veteran’s International Bridge “Los Tomates,” Brownsville & Matamoros Port of Entry at Las Americas and Gateway New Bridge International. We recommend that you cross the border at the Veteran's bridge, access on I-69E US77. This crossing serves motor vehicles, trucks and pedestrians, including RVs. There is a Sentri lane available, and you can obtain Vehicle Importation Permits at Banjercito on the Matamoros side from 7 am to 11 pm.

Our Mexican auto insurance underwriter is among the top 5 insurance companies in Mexico. HDI Seguros is a reputable, responsive company which will handle all claims professionally. International Claims Service will assist you through the claims process once you are back in the U.S., so your car can be repaired as soon as possible.

Trusted Coverage for Brownsville Drivers

Mexican law requires all drivers to have car insurance. This includes American drivers. However, most American auto policies become void when you cross into Mexico. Therefore, you’ll need an active Mexican policy in your possession. You must enroll in coverage before you start your trip.

At Sanborn’s Insurance, we fully understand that many customers will have a lot of questions about getting the appropriate Mexican auto policy. Backed by over 70 years of experience, we can help you navigate those often-tricky waters. So whenever you venture south, you’ll have protection.

What do Mexican auto policies cover?

When you get Mexican car insurance, you’ll notice a lot of similarities to your American policy. However, key differences will also exist. Establishing the correct coverage balance will become critical. Within your policy, you might want to include:

  • Liability Insurance: Insures you against damage you cause others if you are at-fault in a wreck.
  • Physical Damage Coverage: Covers damage to your own vehicle after a wreck. Your policy might also pay for damage from non-accident mishaps, like weather damage or theft.
  • Medical Coverage: Pays for your medical bills and those of your passengers.
  • Legal assistance coverage: If the police detain you following an accident, this coverage will help you obtain bond and a lawyer, if needed.
  • Travel expenses: Helps pay for costs of returning home, such as plane tickets or rental cars.
  • U.S. repair options: Coverage allows you to have your vehicle repaired in the U.S. at the labor rates in your area.
We know your coverage needs will vary. After all, every driver and vehicle differ. Our agents, alongside our Mexican auto insurance partners, will handle all enrollment and claims swiftly and professionally.
