AUG 2: Cuauhtemoc Day - Mexico City, Mexico Mexico City celebrates Cuauhtemoc Day to honour the Aztec emperor who led the resistance against the Spanish invaders and was the last Aztec ruler to surrender to Cortez. The day is full of lively celebrations, dances and ceremonies which take place at Cuauhtemoc Circle in the heart of the city.

AUG 14: Huamantla Fair -Huamantla, Tlaxcala At this event, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, churches and miles of city streets are draped in a beautiful tapestry of colorful flower petals and decorative sawdust. A running of the bulls follows the solemn event.

AUG 15: Day of the Virgin of Charity/Assumption Day - Tlaxcala, Mexico Celebrated throughout the country, but particularly in Tlaxcala, Day of the Virgin of Charity and Assumption Day is a popular religious ceremony that attracts large crowds from across the region. Highlights include an event known as 'carpeting the streets' which sees the town's roads covered with floral displays and coloured sawdust. Another popular aspect is the running of the bulls where runners try to outrun the bulls as they career along a course through the streets. Many other events take place in Tlaxcala with the main focus of the activities happening in the area around the church in the centre of town.

AUG 24-27: Morismas of Bracho (Las Morismas de Bracho)--Zacatecas, Zacatecas State A reenactment of the battles between Moors and Christians, this event involves thousands of actors and has been held annually for more than 300 years.

AUG 28-SEPT 7:International Mariachi and Charro Festival - Guadalajara, Jalisco Annual celebration of mariachi music in the mariachi capital of the world, gathering musicians from Mexico and around the world. www.mariachi-jalisco.com.mx.
