USAA Auto Insurance Drivers: Insure Your Vehicle When Crossing the U.S./Mexico Border
Mexican government requires that all motorists have liability insurance when driving in Mexico. This is for both tourists and residents. Your USAA auto policy may provide limited coverage for any loss or damage that occurs during infrequent trips within a certain distance from the US-Mexico border (Check your policy for details), however, it does not provide you with the mandatory liability coverage required for all motorists and you could be liable for any damages that you cause.
If you plan to drive beyond the border zone (approximately 12 miles from the border), you will need the mandatory Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit to drive a U.S. registered vehicle. You do not need a vehicle importation permit if you are visiting the border zone, Baja, or Sonora “Free Zone”.
If you are a U.S. Diplomat, you will be able to insure your vehicle prior to completing the accreditation and receiving your new diplomatic plates. If you have additional questions, please contact your USAA-Authorized agent, Sanborn's Mexico Insurance at 800-442-7286
Trusted Coverage for USAA Car Insurance Drivers
Mexico auto insurance is available to you from one day up to one year. If you drive to Mexico often or plan to stay for 30 days, you might want to consider buying a 6-month or 1-year policy; long-term policies have special discounts.
What do Mexico auto policies cover?
Within your Mexican auto insurance coverage, you’ll often need:
Claims: Your Mexico insurance policy will have the phone number to report a claim to the Mexican Insurance company. All Claims must be reported while in Mexico. The Mexican insurance company will send an adjuster to the scene of the accident to assess the damage and assist if you need to report it to the police
